BGZ’s Twin Peak Run – Nothing to do with the cult 90s TV show.

Widely regarded as one of the best driving roads in the UK, the A537/A54 Macclesfield to Buxton road aka The Cat & Fiddle road is on our doorstep but apparently had never been the subject of an official AONW event. Well we put that right with a Peak District run which took in almost the entire length of this panoramic road in each direction with the option, for those that wanted to, to do it multiple times.

We met at Lymm services in the customary fashion for a Maccy D breakfast and then headed south on the A50 as far as Knutsford where we the turned east on the A537 to Macc. From there we continued east and up into the Peaks and towards Buxton on our outward run on the Cat & Fiddle road. Just before the end of the run we made a right and took e a detour on an unclassified road that took us to Grin Low and then onto Harpur Hill. From there we dog legged across country to the A6 and then to Ashford in the Water and from there up to our lunch stop at Monsal Head.

After lunch we took a circular route around the area to Longnor that eventually took us back towards Buxton.

The weather was OK so we proceeded into Buxton and took the Whaley Bridge road A5004 and then off to the Erwood Reservoir and up the Goyt Valley before picking up the Cat & Fiddle road at Derbyshire Bridge.

We then did about half way back towards Macc on the Cat & Fiddle road but turned off left and descended down to Wildboarclough where we stopped at the Cragg Inn for some further refreshment.

Important Notes.
50 mph speed limits apply and there ARE cameras. I know!
This is a shortened run designed for the short winter daylight hours.
